How to Become a More Effective Speaker This Week

The way you speak to people makes a difference; if you want to grow your business and better serve your clients, focus on delivering high-quality communication.

You will become a better, more effective speaker this week if you:

Look People in the Eyes.

Confident, open body language goes a long way. In addition to looking people in the eyes, extend a gesture of greeting, whether you’re seeing them for the first time or the fiftieth. Follow the example of the other person in the conversation. Some individuals prefer strong handshakes; others may prefer a friendly elbow or fist bump.

Listen Closely.

Practice active listening. Pay attention when people speak to you; don’t be afraid to ask questions. The more you can learn about people, the more accurately you can serve them.

Speak Clearly.

The easier you are to hear and understand, the easier it will be for your clients to remember your words. Don’t speak too quickly; enunciate when you speak. Deliver your words as clearly as possible.

Use Your Words Thoughtfully.

Think before you speak. Your words matter! Don’t rush your responses to people; speaking deliberately will help you avoid mistakes and organize your thoughts as you speak. Simple responses are often the most clear and effective. Remember to keep the information you want people to remember front and center.

Follow-Up.

Life can get busy; make sure you follow up with your current and potential clients. Checking in periodically with a friendly phone call or an invitation to a meal will demonstrate that you want to be accessible.

Practice.

Prior to speaking in the settings that make you most uncomfortable, rehearse with someone you trust. For example, if you don’t feel confident speaking on the phone, ask a friend or colleague to run through practice phone calls with you. Your mentor can help you get more comfortable in networking settings. Tutorials and online classes can also give you opportunities to practice and improve your communication with your audience.
