Don’t Let This One Thing Hold You Back!

When polled, many people identify “money,” “connections,” or “bad timing” as the greatest barrier to their success. What most of us do not realize, however, is that the number one roadblock preventing most of us from achieving our goals is not funding or lack of opportunity: it’s Self-Doubt.

Many of us are so paralyzed by the fear of making a mistake that we become more confident in our failure than our success. But by believing in yourself, rather than succumbing to fear, you will enable yourself to solve problems and gain the resolve to meet your goals.

Build your self-confidence with the help of these five tips:

Don’t Cling to Criticism: Life is about growth, not perfection. There will be days when you overcome all your obstacles with flying colors. There will also be days when you make mistakes. Learn not to worry what others think about you when you misstep. If you receive criticism, listen, but you do not need to take the feedback as a personal attack. Find a mentor in your field who can help you determine which criticisms will help you grow and which pieces of advice you can take with a grain of salt.

Know Your True Strengths and Weaknesses: While you do not want to be hypercritical of yourself, you should also acknowledge that you are not an expert in all fields. Identify areas where you excel, as well as where you struggle. This will help you know when you are the person for the job and when you should reach out to a mentor or teammate to assist you instead.

Think Ahead: Create an action plan with well thought-out steps. Do your research, practice fiscal responsibility, and set up emergency protections that enable you to stay flexible, even if circumstances change for the worse. Your preparation will give you the confidence to keep moving forward toward your goals.

Improve Your Perspective: It takes time, effort, and a little bit of luck to build a business. You can approach your road to success in one of two ways: you can focus on your trepidation at the challenges ahead, or you can feel excited to have the opportunity to be on a sometimes rocky but fulfilling professional journey! Remember, no one owes you anything. You will have to earn everything that comes to you. Don’t let self-doubt get in the way of your ability to achieve your goals.

Identify What Matters: You may feel doubtful because you are pursuing a goal for the wrong reasons. If your goal is major wealth or fame, for example, make sure you know why this is important. Always identify what matters most to you. Are you looking for a way to build financial security? Would you like to make a difference in people’s lives? Pursue goals that are in-line with your values so that you can believe in what you are working toward.
